The busy cities were roaming with farmers and small businesses. One of the residents describes her native land Hiroshima as, "A city of lush greenery and clean water."
Hiroshima was located on the flat delta of the Ota River. The city was almost entirely flat and only slightly above sea level. 75% of the population was concentrated in the densely built-up area in the center of the city. There was no marked separation for commercial, industrial and residential zones. The population before the bombing was about 255,000 people.

Nagasaki was located at the head of a long bay which forms the best harbor on the southern Japanese home island of Kyushu. The main commercial and residential areas were located at the end of the bay. The city of Nagasaki had the largest sea ports in Japan.
