The bombing of Nagasaki
Bombing of Nagasaki
(ABC news)
Three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan still refused to surrender. The U.S leaders decided that another atomic bomb would have to be dropped. They chose two cities, Kokura was the designated city and Nagasaki was the alternate. On August 9th, 1945 at 3:29 am another bomber named the Bockscar (commanded by Major Charles Sweeney) departed from Tinian. The Bockscar carried the atomic bomb named "Fat Man," it was more powerful than the Bomb dropped at Hiroshima. Sweeney went to the alternate location because of the weather.
On August 9th, 1945 at 11:02 am Bockscar released "Fat man" from 31,000 feet. The bomb detonated 53 seconds later destroying everything within a 1,000 yard radius. The bomb destroyed more than 18,000 homes and killed 74,000 people. Another 75,000 were injured and later died. The bomb would have killed more people but missed its intended target which minimized life loss. This event along with the previous bombing of Hiroshima helped to end the war and save countless allied lives.
